Hotel review

Dating from 1050, this historical castle has been transformed into a unique and stylish hotel, stuffed of character. Set in the dreamy Umbrian hills and surrounded by a vast estate, the castle commands wide views over a Renaissance landscape.

Rooms are housed in medieval spaces and contemporary in design. High beams, arches, and vaulted ceilings mingle with 4-poster beds and an eclectic mix of bespoke furnishings. Fine views complete the experience.

Public spaces - including a magnificent Palm Court with wicker chairs and a cosy library - sport vast stone fireplaces, antiques, paintings and quirky objéts collected by the castle’s aristocratic owner. The result is super-stylish yet comfortable, with excellent attention to detail.

Two restaurants - one formal, one more rustic - offer local dishes with organic ingredients sourced from the castle estates.

There’s a subterranean Bath House spa in the old wine cellars for rubs and scrubs and, in the stunning grounds, an outdoor pool, riding school and stud. Other activities include truffle-hunting, cookery classes, foraging in the woods, clay-pigeon shooting, and wine and olive oil tasting.
