Hotel Indigo, Dundee

In the Indigo's expansive lobby, quirky displays of vintage typewriters, weaving equipment and gaming paraphernalia echo aspects of Dundee's industrial heritage. There are homages too to Keiller's marmalade and NCR, both former mainstays of the city's economy. The building itself is a former 19th-century linen mill, once a flagship of one of the city's giant textile companies. Original ironwork and exposed brickwork and masonry have been retained in public areas for added grooviness. Rooms are bright, sizeable but not overlarge, and unfussily decorated in shades of charcoal, pale grey and taupe, with coloured pillow cases and padded headboards brightening the beds. Bold checked curtains in heavy linen from The Dundee Weaver are further reminders of the building's past. Perks include Arran toiletries in bathrooms, fluffy robes, slippers, tea kettle and Nespresso machine – and vintage copies of The Beano to keep you amused. Bathrooms have walk-in showers and full-size tubs. Cast-iron columns support the ceiling in the Daisy Tasker restaurant, where the menu is unpretentiously stylish, with local accents including Arbroath smokies and (at breakfast) Dundee marmalade. Vegetarians are adequately catered for, and prices are moderate.
