Claiming to be the first hotel on Hydra and housed within a 1930s building on the waterfront, the family-operated Hotel Sophia is owned and run by a pair of sisters. With each room opening out onto a seaview balcony, waking up to the bustle of the Hydra port is a lovely start to the day: take your coffee and watch boats bobbing in the sun and donkeys patiently being loaded up with supplies (no cars are allowed on Hydra). Inside, elevated beds on mezzanines are nestled just below the original ceiling beams. Breakfast is a homemade affair, with ingredients harvested from the island to make jams and apple pies, and the friendly sisters will be happy to talk you through some of the sights is most proud of – from the heritage book shop just moments away to the iconic Jeff Koons sun sculpture majestically glittering on the coast’s edge.
