IZZA opened in October 2023, but its roots feel deeply connected to the past: the hotel brings to life the work of renowned socialite and interior designer, Bill Willis. What’s more, the hotel’s permanent art collection is quite something to behold (and worth many millions of dollars) – over 300 pieces adorn the walls. Even if art isn’t really your thing, don’t be intimidated — the hotel is the definition of relaxed luxury. As soon as you cross the threshold, you’re in a sanctuary — the cool greens and gorgeous smells make the happy chaos of Marrakesh’s medina and souks feel a million miles away.
On arrival, you’re greeted by incredibly friendly staff who are available night and day to make your stay whatever you want it to be. As you make your way to one of IZZA’s 14 individually designed rooms (each named for a 60s/70s creative icon — think Yves Saint Laurent or Cecil Beaton), you’ll glide longingly past the first of three pools (one is on the rooftop) through a courtyard replete with orange trees and cosy corners in which to lounge and feel smug about your hotel choice. Inhale the calm – my husband called it the best smelling hotel he’d been to! The rooms are a tasteful combination of Moroccan traditions (dark wood and stone features) and luxurious fabrics, not to mention the extremely comfortable beds and some swimming pool-sized baths!
Be sure to pay the spa a visit for a relaxing massage, a cleansing hammam or dip your toe in one of the hotel’s three pools. As the day draws to a close, make your way to the bar in the courtyard dedicated to Bill Willis for a tipple and a window into his past, or head up to the rooftop to watch the sun go down with a glass of champagne. Noujoum, the hotel’s recently launched restaurant, is also a real treat: nestled in a corner of the rooftop among the verdant trees, you’ll be seated by the friendly staff in a quiet nook that feels intimate and cosy, despite the restaurant being well attended. From the menu, sample both Moroccan and European fare. Come back the next morning for a final taste of charm and tranquility before braving the great outdoors of the medina, and wishing you were staying here for weeks on end.
Worth every penny, IZZA is a must visit in Marrakesh.
