Casting around for a dream pub to run, Archie and Nicola Orr-Ewing found this one, set on an unspoiled village green with a comic old pub sign swaying in the breeze. They run it just right: bonhomie, bags of character, cosy corners and just the right sort of superior pub grub that suits today’s new-style old country inn. As for the bedrooms, they are the sort we love: simple and unpretentious, yet artfully decorated with junk shop finds, painted furniture, pretty fabrics and comforting throws on excellent, white linen beds. Don't expect perfection at the King's Head: do expect an amusing time.

So many old inns have the character ripped out of them when they are revamped, but not this one. The warren of rooms circling the central bar are all cosy, with home grown hyacinths scenting the air.
