La Bastide de Gordes is a magnificent ancestral castle, set amidst the charming hillside village of Gordes. With luxury at every turn, this hotel strikes the perfect balance between grandeur and comfort. The heavenly rooms are designed in Louis XV style and feature charming ornate furnishings and artwork. Of the hotel's three restaurants, it's hard to look past the sublime one Michelin starred Pèir I Pierre Gagnaire TT. Outside the hotel doesn't disappoint either, with two swimming pools affording staggering views of the Luberon Valley. The surrounding Luberon National Park is host to an abundance of beautiful nature but be warned this hotel is so special, you might never make it that far.

Gordes, the most spectacular of the Luberon's perched villages, probably required an ultra-spiffing hotel. After an £18 million rip-out-and-rebuild refurb, this is it. Food and drink are front rank, staff constitute one large smile. Over decades, I've stayed in perhaps a thousand French hotels. This is top five.
