Recommended by an English friend who lives in Val d’Isere year round (“we put up with the winter crowds because the summers are so peaceful, the resort being too high to be invaded by tourists at that time”) Les Lauzes is a useful base if you are on a budget and happy to forfeit the trappings of a more expensive place, dipping instead into the spa facilities offered by other hotels when you want them, and eating in the many restaurants. Lounge and bar are cosy; some rooms are very small: check on booking.
