The grand lobby of the NH Collection Prague Carlo IV is impressive, and slightly intimidating. A former bank, it maintains a 19th-century, neo-renaissance décor and atmosphere, including spectacular staircases, alabaster pillars, restored frescoes, and the coats of arms of the most influential cities of Bohemia.
Rooms in the historic old building are converted offices, and are correspondingly modest, although period-appropriate furnishings, vaulted ceilings, and large windows that overlook Vrchlicky Garden and the main train station, imbue the space with a greater sense of legroom. In the rear, modern section of the hotel, rooms have a contemporary design. In both, the bathrooms are done in neutral-toned marble, some with tub and shower and some with shower only.
The 1890 Restaurant is excellent, putting a cosmopolitan twist on several Czech national dishes, and serving a variety of interesting national wines. The bar bleeds onto the lobby, as well as the former bank vault, now a cozy, wood-panelled room for private events and tastings. The staff are always on-hand and friendly, ready to help in a multitude of languages.
The subterranean strongroom has been converted into a spa, one of the largest in the city, with a heated twenty-meter swimming pool, a whirlpool, sauna, steam room, and fitness studio plus a whole gamut of treatments. For getting out into the wider city, the cross-city No. 9 tram stops right outside the doors, making access to the sights of Prague pleasantly simple.
