A centuries-old palace in Spain’s oldest winemaking region punctuated by a globetrotting collection of objets d’art — and, fortunately for us, it’s not a private residence but a hotel. This is Palacio de Samaniego, a nine-room estate hotel from banking CEO Ariane de Rothschild, who presumably knows a thing or two about luxury hospitality. What’s perhaps more surprising than the Rothschild surname is that the Palacio should be so stylish and sustainability-minded. The rooms, all named for varietals of grape, display a remarkable attention to detail, as does the Basque fine-dining restaurant. Venture beyond to discover the nearby medieval village, sip Tempranillo at the family’s acclaimed winery, Macán, or take in the majestic scenery by horseback or hot air balloon.
