On the corner of a lane called The Bunny, in the dreamy, hardly discovered valley of the Test, with its reed beds, foot bridges and slow moving chalk streams, stands the Peat Spade Inn: a solid, reassuring brick built inn that has been welcoming fly fishermen since the 19th century. Owned by the Up Pub Group who are committed to their country sports clientele (fishing from April to October, shooting in winter, clays all year round). Just the right atmosphere, with prints and memorabilia on the walls, locals at the bar, good, filling food on the tables and pretty, affordable bedrooms. All are welcome, but it helps if you love the countryside, and this country.

"There is a generous shower room, ample hanging space, mini fridge with fresh milk and wicker tray of tea and coffee things in a Shaker-ish unit and, last but not least, a nice big bed with plump pillows to sink into later."

"The Rod Room, painted sage-green and decorated with cane fly rods, reels, gilt-framed mirrors, period shooting and fishing prints, 1st XI cricket photographs, books and board games, manages to feel old-school without being stuffy."
