Hotel review

Built in the 1920s and now owned and run by the original owner’s great granddaughter, Ratan Vilas is a quiet haven away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Jodhpur.

Set back from the road, with a gorgeous garden in front (including a fabulous pool and plenty of loungers) the property is built in red sandstone in traditional haveli style where all the rooms lead off a couple of central courtyards. Spacious rooms and suites face either the garden or the courtyard, but in our opinion, the pool-view ones have the edge. All are decked out in classic style with plenty of dark wood furniture, old family photos and attractive period pieces. Beds are huge and very comfy, and the bathrooms have everything you’d expect from a property of this calibre including a huge walk-in monsoon shower. And those rooms overlooking the pool have a charming outdoor seating area.

The restaurant is equally as attractive as the rest of the property, with an elegant dining room and lovely terrace (or tables on the lawn) for al fresco dinners. The food is superb — authentic regional Indian cuisine.

Laid back and low key, here it’s all about the family vibe and the present owner aims to evoke that same sense of warmth as her great grandfather created all those years ago. Superb.
