Tucked down a private drive in a wooded ravine, Saltmoore feels deep in the country yet is only a 10-minute walk from the beach between Whitby and Sandsend.

This elegant hotel boasts light and contemporary interiors with oak floors, pale-coloured walls and smart leather and wool-upholstered furniture. Most of the bedrooms have delightful views over the surrounding gardens and woodland - some 85 acres to explore, including orchards and a large kitchen garden. The latter supply up to half of the kitchen’s fruit and vegetable needs which has a commendable 30-mile sourcing policy.

The Sanctuary spa invites you to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, plus there's a wellness cafe - a serene oasis where you can refuel with a light lunch and nourishing smoothie.

After a breezy walk on the beach or exploring Whitby with its abbey, Dracula associations and busy harbour, return to a dip in the pool or a relaxing treatment. Bliss.
