Skeppsholmen is both the name of the hotel and island on which it sits. Perfectly positioned by foot or ferry to Gamla Stan for its narrow lanes and medieval buildings, Ostermalm for smart shopping and restaurants and Djurgarden for museums and amusement parks, while at the same time being away from the hubbub of the city. Originally built as a Royal Marines' barracks in 1699 and converted to a contemporary eco-friendly hotel in 2009 under the guidance of Swedish architect and designer Claesson Koivisto Rune. Rooms are generous with comfy beds and big windows overlooking leafy grounds and the surrounding harbour. Bathrooms are compact but better planned than many with plenty of hooks, rails and shelves. Be prepared for a large 'stone' in the wash basin. The restaurant frequented by residents and Stockholmers alike is open for breakfast, coffee, lunch and dinner and serves food with traditional flavours - Swedish meatballs and plenty of fish. Although there are over 80 bedrooms, the incredibly friendly staff seem to have time for everyone and are always full of useful tips and advice. Skeppsholmen is perfect whether you're a tourist visiting Stockholm for a long weekend or you're here on business - professional at all times but not fussy.

"Combine a friendly staff and a serene location within striking distance of the city’s action, and the Hotel Skeppsholmen hits every mark. With the Byredo candle burning in the lobby and dramatic hallway light installations, the whole place oozes chic; even the elevator is inexplicably cool."
