“A luxury hotel in a renovated cloister. Traditional facades encase elegant contemporary furnishings and works of modern art. Rooms, suites, and serviced studios have all the modern gadgetry and lots of natural light. The bar and dining-room of this central hotel are a fashionable meeting-place, too.”

Hotel review

This large, contemporary-luxury hotel, beside the opera house, is on the site of the 15th-century Dominican Abbey, and takes much of its design cue from this history. Double-height ground-floor areas have a lofty feel with spaces flowing into one another, and there's a central courtyard reminiscent of cloisters. The style, however, is contemporary with leather and velvet chairs, bold lighting, sweeping glass windows and a brasserie-style restaurant serving all-day food. Rooms have a masculine feel with clean-lined furnishings, sober chocolates and creams but with flashes of colour in lampshades and chairs. All are large and restful, some with copies of the richly coloured paintings by Jacque-Louis David, the French artist who lived here in the 19th century. Loft, courtyard and suites have the best views, but the rear-facing rooms are quieter. A good central choice, slightly away from the tourist crowds.
