The George, Hamburg

Everything in this hotel, from its name to its high teas and whiskies served at the bar, cries out quintessential Britishness. The wallpapers are patterned, the leather armchairs shabby chic, and English icons strew the walls. The piece de resistance is its terraces, one on top and one at lower level, which invite river gazing and cocktails. 125 rooms and suites are slightly more contemporary, but still have the same vague Anglo feel about them. There's an excellent Mediterranean restaurant and spa. Certainly very homely.
