Located on a bend of Shanghai’s historic riverfront, The Bund, the Peninsula Shanghai was built in 2009 in ‘echo deco’ style in tribute to Shanghai’s rich Art Deco heritage from the city’s 1930s golden age. The mood of glamour and opulence that characterized the period is also recreated here, from the hotel’s customised fleet of vintage cars (providing complimentary transfers) and private yacht, to its luxurious spa and designer shopping arcade. While it’s certainly big on grand gestures, however, the Peninsula also gets the finer details absolutely right (a claim not many hotels in China can make) such as a perfect Western breakfast, and rooms equipped with ‘dumb waiters’ for laundry, making for an effortless stay.
