A stone's throw from the Hudson, André Balazs' hotel straddles the Highline, formerly an elevated freight line now artfully transformed into a garden walkway. The purpose-built hotel¹s architecture is reminiscent of London¹s Festival Hall and the environs, with their low-rise warehouses, share some of the cool starkness of the South Bank, happily leavened by the stores of top fashion designers and their long-legged customers. The hotel¹s entrance is irritatingly hard to find, but the uncluttered, if small, rooms have huge windows, some with views as far as the Statue of Liberty. The restaurants are fun, informal and stylish and the 18th floor lounge and bar, open from 4pm till 9pm (when it becomes a nightclub), has an amazing 360° panorama.

"With its velvet-roped bistro, ground-floor beer garden and two ultra-hip rooftop club lounges, its aesthetic is LA flash meets New York glamour."
