Though it’s been operating as a ‘beer house’ since 1841, the Swan has moved with the times. Today, guests in its light and airy bedrooms enjoy Roberts radios and claw-foot baths, with vegan toiletries supplied by ethical brand Ubiety in the gleaming en-suites. If you can, plump for one of the larger, high-ceilinged doubles, which feel extravagantly spacious and have tongue and groove panelling and a subdued palette of neutrals and greys. The welcome is reassuringly old-fashioned downstairs, where a young and enthusiastic staff serve elevated pub food. A wood-fired pizza oven sits centre-stage between the bar and restaurant, and there’s a lovely tree-edged garden for al fresco dining during the warmer months. At breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu makes abundant use of quality local produce, from Cheddar cheese to Dorset beef.
