It’s plum in the centre of pretty and popular Grasmere, but this hotel doesn’t feel hemmed in by the crowds. Its gardens and tree-lined drive give it a sense of privacy although it’s only minutes from the village’s shops, cafes and bubbling river. The lake and Wordsworth attractions are all within a 10-minute stroll, too. And it probably has one of the best beer gardens in the Lake District; large and south-facing, making it the perfect place to recover after a day’s walking or exploring.
Run by the Roberts family since 2005 - now in the second generation - the much-extended white-washed, Georgian farmhouse has retained original features in the main building with a pillared hall and big sash windows in handsome-size rooms. Bedrooms have a fresh country style with painted wooden furniture, plantation shutters and tongue-and-groove panelled headboards. Entry-level rooms are compact but often with good-size bathrooms. Bright-coloured tweed cushions and blanket throws – with different patterns in each room – pay homage to a Scottish tweed merchant who annually visited Grasmere to sell his cloth. Rooms in the separate mews have a cosy mezzanine bedroom, and share a hot tub.
Apart from breakfast, food is taken in the adjoining rustic-style bar, famed for its real ale and cider selection (around 15), with a menu of hearty, fell-walkers’ dishes such as home-made pies, bouillabaisse and delicious lemon tart. Breakfast, served in the light-filled and fire-warmed dining room, has a good range of cooked-to-order dishes to fuel you for the day’s activities. Throughout, staff are warm and welcoming, and keen that guests get the most out of their stay.
