“A beautifully preserved 19th century town house that sits on Avenida da Liberdade, flanked by theatres, designer shops and restaurants, offering 25 rooms spread over six floors, an outdoor swimming pool and a restaurant serving Portuguese cuisine, with staff so friendly you will return just for them”

Hotel review

Conveniently situated on Lisbon’s main avenue, avoiding the traffic-choked, narrow streets of Lisbon’s down town, Hotel Valverde is a real home from home. Just 25 rooms and suites are found on the six floors that make up this elegant 19th century townhouse, whose décor pays homage to Portugal’s heritage. Portuguese antique prints and modern art hang on the walls; the porcelain comes from Braz Gil Studios and the woven geometric rugs and tiles on the floors are all locally sourced. A nod to the country’s Moorish heritage can be seen in the pierced, sliding wooden screens that divide some rooms from their chic, black and white bathrooms with cast-iron, stand-alone tubs and generous rain showers.

Downstairs, the Sitio restaurant has a brasserie feel to it, with comfy wooden chairs with big cushions and sofas. The menu is Portuguese focused with dishes like octopus with rice and a good selection of local wines. There is live music daily, alternating between jazz, bass nova and Fado. Views are onto the leafy courtyard outside, with a swimming pool and space to soak up the sun.

Lisbon hotels: 13 of the best

Clever use of touchy-feely textiles, vintage and contemporary artworks and restored mid-20th-century furniture keeps things agreeably mixed up at Hotel Valverde. It's dark, hushed and discreet yet smiling and unstuffy, with sunshine by the pool and terrace rather than on the roof, as is the more typical Lisbon way.
