About Tasmania
Beautiful Tasmania sits slightly south of mainland Australia. A rugged island of rocky, snow-capped mountains, vast forests and wild plains fringed by beaches of golden sands, this is a dazzling destination for outdoorsy travellers. Australia’s only island state, Tasmania feels distinctly different from the mainland, with its heritage towns, unspoilt landscapes and charming, laid-back vibe. This is reflected in many of the best places to stay in Tasmania — intimate, often owner-run escapes in spectacular surroundings.
Some of our Tasmania Collections:
Begin your explorations in coastal Hobart, strolling through the lovely, leafy town centre with its historic townhouses, artsy museums and burgeoning crop of top-notch eateries and bars. A small, friendly city, this is a great base for sailing excursions, cycling, sight-seeing and stocking up on seasonal produce at bustling markets. Hop across to Bruny Island for superb wildlife encounters, or retreat to the farmhouses and homesteads of the countryside for delicious cuisine and a real sense of tranquility. Foodies and wine aficionados will adore the Tamar Valley in particular; Launceston is a brilliant springboard for tours and tastings.
Tasmania’s isolated setting has preserved some of the rarest plants and animals in the region. Admire the pristine green-greys of the Huon Valley, clamber up the craggy peaks of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, or kayak and sail along the island’s lakes and rivers. Some of the best places to stay in Tasmania are coastal escapes, ideal for sun-drenched days spent swimming, surfing and soaking up the splendour of this very special destination.

Travel Information
- Fly to Hobart Airport or Launceston Airport from a larger hub, such as Melbourne or Sydney. Alternatively, arrive to Tasmania by ferry from Port Melbourne or Davenport. Hop on a bus or take a taxi to your hotel from there. Many hotels will also be happy to arrange an airport or port pick up in advance.
- Hobart is well-connected by public transport, but you'll want the independence of your own ride to explore Tasmania more freely. Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
- Visit in the summer months — between December and February — for pleasant temperatures and plenty of sunshine. This is peak season; you may find the spring and autumn shoulder season quieter, and hotels often offer reduced rates in those months.
