Capital of the Yukon and crossroads of the Alaskan and Klondike highways, Whitehorse plays a part in any journey into this spectacular region of wilderness. This is where you’ll find the outfitters etc. to supply your adventures, and it’s a great place to base yourself while exploring the Yukon River. You’ll find many hotels and motels in the centre of town, but some of the best places to stay in Whitehorse are outside the city centre, where you’re closer to the wilderness which has brought most people to this chilly remote part of the world.
There are a couple of well known hikes in the Whitehorse area, the Miles Canyon hike - which is a long day hike - and the Grey Mountain hike, which is a much shorter one, plus the Millennium Trail hike, which is a paved walk more than a hike really.
The SS Klondike is also worth a visit, this was one of the ferries which used to run up and down the Yukon during the 30s, 40s and 50s. As is the Old Log Church, the only log-cabin-style cathedral in the world. And if you feel like the town is a bit bland and government-building-y, then look a bit deeper and you’ll find a world of artistic and historic treasures.
While this environment can be extremely challenging, it can also be an amazing place to relax and unwind - and one of our Guru’s recommendations for the best places to stay in Whitehorse is testament to that.
