Frutillar is a city in the Los Lagos region of Northern Patagonia on the banks of Lake Llanquihua. The best places to stay in Frutillar are perfect for enjoying the beauty of the region and this ‘City of Music’.
The area was originally carved out of the forest by German settlers from Hamburg who arrived in 1852. They developed a thriving economy based on agriculture and forestry, bringing new technology and education.
This is a particularly beautiful part of Chile. The Lake has been compared to Lake Geneva and the views of the mountains and the Osomo volcano are stunning.
Visit the ‘German Museum’. This village which was built by the first settlers and includes their homes, a watermill, a warehouse and gardens which have been preserved for posterity.
On the lakeside is the Teatro del Lago (‘Theatre in the Lake’) which hosts concerts all year round. It has the best acoustics in South America and draws thousands of visitors. The main music festival is a two week affair at the end of January.
The Yacht Club (est. 1986) has a very good reputation and hosts spring and summer regattas.
A more recent work in progress is ‘Patagonia Virgin’ - a new development featuring hotels, apartments, restaurants, shops, golf, tennis, polo etc
