About Avoriaz

The brainchild of Gérard Brémond, Avoriaz was founded in 1967, originally as a ‘St. Tropez de Neige’ for the era’s jet-set crowd. Designed by bright young architects and inspired by Le Corbusier, the resort town was initially all high-rise buildings and acute angles. Now less exclusive, this alpine resort town retains its sense of trendy style, with design-led hotels and chalets: some of the best places to stay in Avoriaz feel distinctly futuristic.

Part of the vast Portes du Soleil ski area, famed for its 700 kilometres of pistes across both France and Switzerland, Avoriaz is also appealingly close to popular Morzine. Families will appreciate the range and proximity of the ski slopes, as well as the expert-led ski schools for little ones — or grown-ups — who are still finding their feet. Summer visitors can hike, play a round at the picturesque Golf Club Avoriaz, or zip along high-speed mountain bike trails. A frequent host for part of the Tour de France, the resort has become a top downhill mountain biking destination in recent years.

Travel information

  • Fly to Geneva Airport, and travel onwards to Avoriaz by car or bus. The journey should take around one-and-a-half hours.

  • The ski season begins in November, but serious skiers can expect the best snow between January and March. Alternatively, travel between June and early September for summer hikes and biking. The area becomes hugely busy during the Tour de France.
