About Cluny

Perched in the green heart of Burgundy, the picturesque town of Cluny is home to one of France’s most important religious sites: Cluny Abbey. Popular with art and history aficionados, the town boasts everything from low-key guesthouses to impressive self-catering villas and chic hotels. The best places to stay in Cluny are right in the town centre, perfect for on-foot explorations.

Founded in 910 by William I, Duke of Aquitaine, Cluny was the site of an imposing Benedictine Abbey, home to Europe’s most powerful monastic order until the consecration of St. Peter’s in Rome in 1506. Modern-day visitors can discover the ruins of the Basilica of St. Peter & St. Paul, and admire the Abbey's ancient cloisters, murals and intricate carvings. Visit the Museum of Archaeology & Art, or head further afield to the Château de Cormatin, the Fortresse de Berzé and lovely Mâcon. There are vineyard visits and tastings aplenty in the region.

Cluny’s other claim to fame is its role as part of Haras National, France’s national centre for breeding and training horses. Originally a stud farm established by Napoleon in 1807, the centre now offers guided tours — great for horse lovers of all ages!

Peer into quirky independent shops, peruse the Saturday market and savour a glass of wine in a laid-back bar whilst you’re in town. Whether you’re here for the wine or the ancient architecture, the best places to stay in Cluny are intimate spots, promising warm hospitality and lots of character.
