A pretty university city crammed with red-roofed residences set along narrow lanes, Tübingen is framed by the Neckar and Ammer Rivers, as well as lines of verdant plane trees. A lively little community with a youthful buzz, it's a wonderful weekend base, just half an hour’s drive from Stuttgart. Cosy B&Bs and private houses await, but our Gurus have highlighted a delightful boutique hotel fit for travellers of all ages. Central and very charming, we really do think that this is the best place to stay in Tübingen.
Explore the medieval old town on foot or bicycle; this is one of the few intact Altstadts in Germany, having escaped the bombing of the Second World War. Winding cobbled lanes and hillside alleyways of ancient steps weave their way between pointy-roofed buildings, half-timbered houses and picturesque canals. Market Square, topped by the beautiful city hall, is well worth visiting, as are the imposing Collegiate Church and Hohentübingen Castle, both part of the university.
Fill your bags with flavoursome produce on market days, join locals for screenings at the Rathaus outdoor cinema, or pick a perch in the bustling beer gardens during the summer months. Punting on the river is hugely popular — particularly with students — as are wanders around the elongated Neckar Island, a fantastic summer events venue. Book your trip well in advance during the idyllic summer months or the charming Christmas market season — the best places to stay in Tübingen fill up fast!
