Explore the medieval old town on foot or bicycle; this is one of the few intact Altstadts in Germany, having escaped the bombing of the Second World War. Winding cobbled lanes and hillside alleyways of ancient steps weave their way between pointy-roofed buildings, half-timbered houses and picturesque canals. Market Square, topped by the beautiful city hall, is well worth visiting, as are the imposing Collegiate Church and Hohentübingen Castle, both part of the university.

Punting on the river is hugely popular — particularly with students — as are wanders around the elongated Neckar Island, a fantastic summer events venue.
