About Aosta
Capital city of the Aosta Valley, Aosta is a proper city, complete with a cathedral, museums, shopping etc., while also being so close to the ski fields that it has a cable car station, linking the city to the skin runs at Pila. Aosta is also close to the Gran Paradiso National Park. So it’s an extremely versatile destination. Our Gurus say it’s perfect for ‘varied interests’. Read ‘ski widows/ widowers’. The best places to stay in Aosta have wonderful valley views, and are a surprisingly affordable range of traditional alpine hotels, welcoming guesthouses, new-builds, and chalet-style inns.
Aosta is a wonderful destination if you love an historic tale, and our Gurus strongly recommend the best places to stay in Aosta to anyone who appreciates a Roman tale. The Romans occupied the region in 25BC, it’s strategically, as well as spectacularly positioned, and their bridge, arches, Praetorian Gates, theatre and forum have all survived to impress guests today. The Aosta Valley is also known for its many castles. Aside from man-made treasures, Aosta is surrounded by spectacular natural ones, including the Gran Paradiso National Park which has a great historic tale of its own: it was Italy’s first national park, created to help protect the ibex you’ll see grazing here - probably while you’re walking, or biking in summer, or snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in winter.
As well as providing an incredible base for an active break, and for a sightseeing holiday, Aosta is also a fantastic destination for foodies. Aosta has been under both French and Italian rule, and its culinary heritage deliciously informs its present. Some of out recommendations for the best places to stay in Aosta have connections to local cooking classes, or local cheesemakers.

- If you’re coming to ski, the Aosta Valley ski season runs between about mid-December until about mid-April. The rule usually holds that the higher up resorts are the most snow sure, and the city of Aosta is comparatively low, so this isn’t the right choice if you want to be right by the slopes. The winters here are cold, though, so you should be prepared for snow. Aosta can be very hot in summer, with average temperatures in the middle of summer edging towards 30°C, so if you’re here to hike, or mountain bike, most people plan for the late spring and early summer, when there’s a charming dust of snow on the peaks, but temperate, sunny conditions below.
