About Maglie

Maglie is a faded Baroque beauty in Puglia’s Salento region, just thirty kilometres south of Lecce, and close neighbours with pretty Nardò and Galatina. Maglie doesn’t have the gracious scale of Lecce, this was a town of great industry, and during its golden age it was mills, pasta factories, and fabric production that required the great building projects. But don’t let that sound unglamorous, Maglie has an impressive duomo, and several grand churches, and our recommendation for the best places to stay in Maglie is a beautifully reimagined tannery close to the centre of town.

Surrounding Maglie are some of Puglia’s flattest fields and plains, dotted with ancient dolmens and menhirs; indeed the whole area is always hosting archaeological exploration and Maglie’s museums offer a wealth of local historic artefacts collected from just outside the city. As well as being ideal for anyone with an historic interest, this region is also perfect for cyclists, and the best places to stay in Maglie are ideal bases for exploring Lecce and other local towns, and for visiting Puglia’s Adriatic and Ionian coastlines. We also recommend the best places to stay in Maglie to foodies looking for a Puglia centre packed with small local restaurants, and surrounded by unique and interesting producers.

The Best Places to Stay in Maglie

For Great Value

  • Corte dei Francesi is an elegant stone building beautifully converted into a stylish hotel by a great architectural imagination and plenty of glass! The beautiful pale stone building, with its dramatically vaulted ceilings and worn flagstone floors looks too regal to be a tannery, however that’s what was in a previous life. Now the ten rooms and suites have large, contemporary bathrooms, great layouts, and art to contrast with the original stone. The building also houses a museum and exhibition space, and there’s a sunny breakfast terrace, and bar for guests.

Travel Information

  • Maglie’s closest international airport is Brindisi Airport, which is about an hour away by car, or about two and a half hours by public transport. Bari Airport is the other option, about two hours away by car, or six hours by public transport.
  • If you plan to hire a car, which we would advise if you want to get out and explore further afield, we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
  • Maglie is landlocked within beautiful Puglia, which means it has a Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild winters, but without the actual coastal location to provide cooling breezes. So in the hottest months of July and August, Maglie anticipates temperatures of 30+°C. November through February are the wettest months, but December is still very cheery with Christmas decorations. In spring the flowers are a wonder, and you’ll have the gradually warming centres to yourself, then there’s bustling summer, lasting until late September, and the quieter, but still very cheerful stretch between October and December, when the weather is mild and you can still enjoy lunch on the terrace.
