About Maiori

Maiori is one of the best beach holiday destinations on the Amalfi Coast, blessed with a kilometre long stretch of sand – a far cry from the tiny sandy coves this beautiful stretch of coastline is known for. This length of beach is backed by a buzzing promenade too, another unusual sight for the Amalfi Coast, and these differences make this a very popular pick for families, and sun worshippers. The best places to stay in Maiori are just as varied as you’ll find in other Amalfi Coast centres, with converted palazzos, traditional hotels, and B&Bs, but it also has some larger, newer, purpose-built resort-type hotels too.

Maiori’s beach was created during a flood, which also destroyed some of the town’s historic centre, which explains the modern hotels, and town centre. It still has some historic sights, though: the colourful, majolica-tiled dome of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria dominates what remains of the original port town, while the headland to the east of town has the incredible Santa Maria de Olearia, which is an 11th century monastery completely carved into the cliff face there. On the cliffs above the town are the ruins of a beautiful castle, a relic from Maiori’s heyday as a powerful local port.

Just around the headland from Maiori is Minori, which also has a lovely beach. Plus a pretty harbour with pastel buildings, the remains of one of the area’s finest Roman villas, and some fantastic pasta restaurants. And with Amalfi only four miles to the east, the best places to stay in Maiori also make great bases for exploring the wider area.

For romantics

  • The Hotel Botanico San Lazzaro is a romantic choice, a traditional clifftop hotel with dreamy views from all of its 14 elegant rooms and four suites. The infinity pool overlooks the water, as do the terraced gardens, with their citrus orchards, orchids and other exotic plants. The terrace restaurant and bar offer unbeatable views too. The décor combines tradition with craft – expect hand-painted furniture and ceramics, beautiful terracotta floors, and silk-taffeta drapes. It’s all very quintessential Amalfi Coast, and with no children allowed, they’re able to promise peace too.

For great value

  • The B&B Maiure is a six room B&B, elegantly converted from a well positioned old palazzo, which still has its grand sweeping staircases, vast windows, panelled ceilings and fireplaces. Breakfast is served on the breezy terrace, where there’s a fantastic view too, and there are a number of excellent places to eat and drink just a short stroll away.

Travel information

  • Naples Airport is Maiori’s closest international airport, and it’s about an hours drive away, or just an hour and a half by public transport. Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport might be convenient for connections, but it’s about three hours drive, or four hours away by train and bus.

  • As with the rest of the Amalfi Coast, the most popular time to visit Maiori is during the summer, it’s hot and sunny but busy with it. Daily maximum temperatures in July and August average at 30° C, so if you’re not so good in the heat you might want to opt for May, June or September, which are still bustling periods, with lots of sunshine. Some argue for visiting the Amalfi Coast in spring, when the flowers are blooming, and many of the local towns are opening up excitedly after the winter — the Italian travel season officially begins at Easter. The Amalfi Coast hosts a couple of festivals and events during spring too.
