Set between Nozawa Onsen and Myoko Kogen, Madarao is a little mountain resort town in Japan's Nagano Prefecture. Less than three hours by train from Tokyo, this is a wonderful destination for keen skiers of all ages. Accommodation options include private lodges as well as intimate chalet hotels, perfect for fun-filled holidays as a couple or with friends and family. The best places to stay in Madarao are close to the slopes — perfect for active adventurers.
The site of Japan’s first Freestyle Skiing Competition, Madarao is known for its fantastic deep powder snow. The resort receives more than 10 metres of snowfall each winter, and there are 30-odd scenic runs, many of which wind their way between the trees. Neighbouring Tangram is also great for skiing and snowboarding, whilst Snowmobile Land invites travellers to enjoy adrenaline-fuelled snowmobile or snow rafting excursions.
Nearby Iiyama has an appealing buzz for an evening out, but the best places to stay in Madarao are cosy and laid-back. This is a favourite mountain resort for young families or quiet couples.
