About Latvia
Latvia is a Baltic country that neighbours Estonia to the north and Lithuania to the south. The country has a long history of occupation by foreign powers, from the Teutonic Knights in the Middle Ages to the Soviet Union in the 20th century. Today, it’s a popular destination for travellers looking for a new experience. The accommodation options are as varied as the places you might plan to visit, from chic city centre boutique hotels, to quaint B&Bs and country houses. Our selection of the best places to stay in Latvia are currently all city based, but we will bring you new recommendations as soon as we find them!
Latvia’s main attraction is its capital city, Riga. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a wonderful fusion of medieval and Art Nouveau architecture, with cobbled streets lined with charming cafes and restaurants. The Old Town is particularly beautiful, with its many churches and museums, while the Central Market is a great place to pick up some local produce. If you’re interested in Latvia’s history, visit the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, which details the country’s harrowing experience under Nazi and Soviet rule.
Beyond Riga, there’s plenty to see and do in Latvia. The Kurzeme Coast is popular with beachgoers, whilst the Gauja National Park offers wonderful opportunities for hiking, cycling and horse riding. The Latvian countryside is also ideal for exploring by car or bike — especially if you’re interested in sampling some of the country’s excellent local produce!
