About Rodrigues

An hour and half to the east of Mauritius by plane, Rodrigues is amongst the most remote inhabited islands in the world. Stretching just 48 square miles and surrounded by a breathtaking lagoon, the island is a fascinating biodiversity hotspot — and amongst the planet’s top ten kite surfing spots. The best places to stay in Rodrigues range from charming eco lodges to lovely sea-facing hotels, perfect for couples, friends and families alike. Whether you’re dreaming of seaside seclusion, skimming the surface of sparklingly clear waters, or marvelling at birds, marine life and enormous tortoises, you need look no further.

Keen adventurers will adore hiking through Rodrigues’ verdant mountainous interior. Expect to spot birds flitting between the treetops and to catch stunning glimpses of the coastline as you make your way along marked paths either independently or with an expert guide. Delve into giant tortoise conservation efforts at the François Leguat Reserve, where efforts have also been made to preserve the island’s flora, and an impressive cave system. Don’t miss wandering through characterful Port Mathurin, Rodrigues’ pretty capital and commercial hub, as you criss-cross the island.

The big draw, however, is undoubtedly the pristine seas which surround Rodrigues. Marvel at the myriad marine life on snorkelling and diving excursions, or hone your kayaking, sailing and kite surfing skills. The lagoon which frames the south of the island, where two of our Gurus’ picks of the best places to stay in Rodrigues are set, is a kite surfing hotspot and you’ll find topnotch instructors and world-class equipment for lessons or hire. Long strolls along white sand beaches, striking sunsets and delicious seafood dinners savoured to the sound of a traditional band add to the appeal in this very special corner of the Indian Ocean.

The Best Places to Stay in Rodrigues

For an eco lodge

  • ORIGIN Eco Chalet is a collection of just four chalets tucked within verdant grounds in the island's interior. Owned by a couple from Mauritius and run by a welcoming team, the lodge prides itself on its strong eco-focus, use of reclaimed materials, and fantastic farm-to-table eatery. For families or groups

  • C Rodrigues Mourouk has a fresh, playful feel, with bold pops of colour in communal areas, striped fabrics and pink-and-yellow deck chairs set around the pool and on white sands. The hotel faces a gorgeous lagoon — one of the best places on the island to learn to kite surf. Enjoy big buffet breakfasts and dinners, sundowners at the beach bar, pool dips and kayaking, sailing and kite surfing. A fun, friendly choice for active types.

For romance

  • Constance Tekoma is a tranquil haven on Rodrigues' secluded east coast. Ocean-view villas boast draped four-poster beds, big bathrooms and warm teal tones. Travel information

  • Fly to Rodrigues' Plaine Corail Airport from Mauritius' Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, just 1.5 hours' flight away.
  • Small and easy to navigate, Rodrigues is a real pleasure to explore by road. Contact our online partner Rentalcars if you would like to hire a car.
  • A year-round destination, Rodrigues is blessed with a wonderful climate. Expect the highest rainfall in January and February — also cyclone season in the Indian Ocean. The island has a cyclone warning system, and storms with high winds tend to last a few days, just a couple of times a year. The winter months of June and July are slightly cooler, but the shoulder seasons of March-April and September-October are ideal for holidays with fewer crowds. Kite surfers should travel between June and November for the best conditions.
