About Monção

Perched on the banks of the Minho River, Monção sits right on the border between Portugal and Spain. Historically contested between Portugal and the Kingdom of Castille, the town has a fascinating yet turbulent past, and has long attracted curious heritage aficionados. The region is also known for its wine production and superb spas which, combined with the best places to stay in Monção being charming heritage properties, make it ideal for romantic escapes.

Amble around the centre of town to admire beautiful heritage buildings, lovely lanes lined with shops and cafés, and gorgeous views of the surrounding vineyards at almost every turn. Admire the intriguing collection of artefacts housed in the 18th century Casa Museu de Monção, before stepping inside the Romanesque Igreja Matriz, famously the burial place of local legend Deu-la-Deu Martins. The ruins of the 1306-built Castelo de Monção are another local landmark — though very little remains of what would once have been an imposing fortified castle.

Head beyond the town to the grand Palácio da Brejoeira, designed by architect Carlos Amarante and built in 1834. The interiors are spectacular, and the 30 hectares of gardens are beautiful; both are well worth taking the time to explore. Venture further afield to follow hiking and cycling trails, before enjoying soothing spa afternoons or delicious dinners at one of the best places to stay in Monção.
