About Romania

Romania is a country of great natural beauty, with a fascinating history and a warm, welcoming population. This Eastern European nation is well-known for its striking Carpathian Mountains, the Danube River and the Danube Delta — both of which offer excellent opportunities for active adventures or relaxing river cruises. Accommodation options range from simple guesthouses and B&Bs to chic city hotels with top-notch restaurants and bars. Many of the best places to stay in Romania are in the capital city of Bucharest, but there are also some wonderful rural hideaways.

The Carpathian Mountains are home to hiking trails, horse riding, cycling and bird watching opportunities. The Gurghiu Valley is particularly beautiful, and the Piatra Craiului National Park is a haven for bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. The Danube River is ideal for sailing, kayaking, fishing and swimming, whilst the Danube Delta — Europe’s largest — is a haven for bird watchers, anglers and sailors. The delta’s waterways are also home to myriad freshwater fish, turtles and otters.

Bucharest is a fascinating city with a rich cultural heritage. Visit the Palace of Parliament — the world’s second-largest civilian building — as well as the National Museum of Art, the Village Museum and the Memorial House of the Romanian Royal Family. There are also great bars and eateries in the city centre, as well as regular festivals and events throughout the year.

Whether you’re travelling as a family or couple, or as a group of friends, the best places to stay in Romania promise an enticing insight into this intriguing country’s past and present.

Travel Information

  • Bucharest's international airport is situated 17km north west of the city. There are other international options dotted across the country depending on where you are planning to visit.
  • If you wish to hire a car, we recommend you check out the prices with Rentalcars
  • The peak summer months are the hottest time of year in Romania, and often the best time for many to travel, especially if you are heading to the Black Sea coast. However birders going to the Danube Delta should aim for May; in April the rural areas can look spectacular filled with wildflowers and trees exploding into blossom; September too can provide wonderful autumn colours.
