About Jeju Island

Set in the Korea Strait, Jeju is South Korea’s largest island. Inhabited since the early Neolithic period, the province has its own rich culture, language and history. It’s also stunning; formed through the eruption of an underwater volcano, the island is crowned by the highest peak in South Korea. Brilliant for heritage buffs as well as outdoorsy travellers, Jeju is beginning to attract more international visitors. Accommodation options are wonderfully wide-ranging, and the best places to stay on Jeju Island include striking luxury skyscrapers as well as clifftop escapes with superb sea views.

South Korea’s favourite domestic holiday destination, Jeju brims with things to see and do. Delve into the island’s heritage with a visit to Jeju Folk Village, where traditional buildings are clustered together, or at the Haenyeo Museum. Art galleries also abound, with the Arario Museum, the Jeju Museum of Art and the Yumin Art Museum being particular highlights. The bustling Jeju Dongmum Market, on the other hand, will delight keen foodies and curious creatives, who can meet makers and pick up up unusual handicrafts.

When it comes to Jeju’s natural wonders, the 182-metre Seongsan Ilchul-bong is top of the list. A dramatic extinct volcano, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and a hugely popular place to catch the sunrise. Hike or cycle through the Hallasan National Park, clambering up Mount Hallasan or rambling through the ancient Saryeoni Forest. Spectacular waterfalls include Jeongbang Pokpo and Cheonjiyeon Pokpo; Manjang-gul is the starting point for a foray into fascinating lava-tube caves. Whether you’re eager to explore over- and underground, to immerse yourself in a rich ancient culture, or simply to unwind in style at one of the best places to stay on Jeju Island, this region really does have it all.
