About Begur

Less than two hours north of Barcelona, Begur is a delightfully slow-paced town. Popular with those escaping Barcelona for the weekend, this Costa Brava destination invites visitors to unwind with wonderful food and wine, long countryside walks and dips in the Mediterranean Sea. The best places to stay in Beguar are scattered between the charming old town and the ocean, with some fantastic options to suit a range of tastes and budgets.

Explore Begur’s old town on foot for a sense of the area’s rich Moorish and Spanish history. You’ll find a plethora of boutiques, galleries, bars and eateries in the town itself, whilst the views from the hilltop medieval castle are not to be missed. Begur is set amidst vineyards and villages, perfect for winding walks, horse rides and cycling excursions. Visit Salvador Dalí’s crumbling castle at Pubol, or spend an afternoon in pretty Llafranc.   • Hostal Sa Rascassa has five simple guest rooms just steps from the beach. The big draw is the sensational restaurant — part of the reason why this little bolthole was twice voted best hotel in the world. Savour the fresh catch of the day with family and friends in a refreshingly relaxed setting.
  • Hotel Restaurant Aiguaclara, in the heat of historic Begur, is a beautiful restored mansion with heaps of history. The onsite restaurant, The Clara, is a delight, specialising in fantastic flavours made for sharing with loved ones in a convivial setting. Very charming.
  • Galena Mas Comangau Hotel is a converted farmhouse with one of the region's finest Catalan restaurants. Just outside Begur's historic walls, the hotel fuses contemporary style with more traditonal elements. A traditional choice for heritage buffs and keen foodies.
  • Hotel del Teatre has an exceptional restaurant inspired by Empordanese cuisine with a modern twist. Chef Albert Passerell creates innovative dishes using zero-mile produce. Sleek interiors and striking views complete the picture at this romantic, food-focused bolthole.

For a rural escape

  • Rectoria de Regencos, set in a gorgeous sandstone building typical of rural Catalonia, has light-filled interiors with clean, crisp lines and minimalist furnishings. Intimate and low-key, this is a top rural retreat for couples, friends and families, who can book out the whole place.
  • El Convent De Begur is a chic four-star hotel housed in a restored 18th-century convent once belonging to the Order of the Minims. The original convent cells have now been transformed into 25 attractive rooms with wooden furnishings and terracotta-tiled floors. The El Refectori restaurant serves modern Catalan cuisine using top, locally sourced produce, and the beach is just 600 metres away.

For great value

  • Hotel Hanoi is a lovely nine-bedroom B&B with fresh interiors, natural materials and lots of plants. Delicious breakfasts are served on the pretty terrace, and rates are very affordable. A wonderful base for budget-conscious travellers.
  • El Petit Convent also offers reasonable rates. Set on a cobbled street in central Begur, the hotel has exposed stone walls and arches, and contemporary Scandinavian-style furnishings topped with white textiles. A chic little hotel for those keen to stay in Begur's old town.

  • Fly into Girona-Costa-Brava Airport if travelling from within Spain, or to the much larger Barcelona-El Prat International Airport, 1 hour and 40 minutes away.
