About Caceres

A UNESCO World Heritage site, ancient Cáceres is one of Extremadura's most beautiful little cities. It’s a brilliant destination for culture aficionados and and history buffs, who will adore strolling along little lanes lined with ancient buildings, buzzy cafés and independent boutiques. There’s a good selection of accommodation options within the city’s stone walls, ranging from simple B&Bs to chic hotels, fit for a whole array of budgets. Our pick of the best places to stay in Cáceres is a fabulous foodie favourite, with an impressive Michelin-starred restaurant and hip hotel.

Cáceres’ oldest treasures date back to around 25BC, when the town was a thriving Roman centre. Visit the Cáceres Museum or take a guided walking tour for an insight into the city’s history. Highlights include impressive churches, municipal buildings and grand restored residences, some of which reflect the city’s rise in tandem with the discovery of the New World. Don’t miss the beautifully arcaded Plaza Mayor, or taking a trip to the nearby Cave of Maltravieso, filled with Paleolithic-era paintings.

Take a day trip to Madrid for yet more culture, history and great shopping, or venture into the countryside to hike and cycle. There’s terrific regional fare to be savoured all across town, but no better fine dining restaurant than Atrio, at the best place to stay in Cáceres.
