About El Bierzo

A tranquil part of Castile-León, El Bierzo is centred on the pretty medieval city of Ponferrada and the bucolic countryside which surrounds it. One of the great mining centres of the ancient world at the time of the Romans, it has since become a world-class wine-producing region, and a favourite with foodies looking to explore underrated parts of northern Spain. There’s a small choice of lovely accommodation options in the area, with the best places to stay in El Bierzo including a charming little hotel in Villafranca del Bierzo.

Step back into the Roman era with a visit to the disused gold mines at Las Médulas, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Closed since the 1980s, the mines offer a fascinating insight into the region’s past. Today, you’ll find the hills and fields of El Bierzo dotted with wonderful wineries, many of which offer excellent tours and tastings. Ponferrada’s enormous Castillo de los Templarios was built to protect pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, who have been walking through this region for centuries. Delve into this rich cultural past at the El Bierzo Museum and by popping in to some of the countless ancient churches which are scattered throughout the area.

Walking, horse riding and cycling routes abound, offering a beautiful way to take in the region’s magnificent fields, rolling hills and craggy mountains. Summers can be very hot, so outdoorsy explorers may prefer to visit in spring or early autumn instead. The best places to stay in El Bierzo will also be a little bit quieter at those times.
