Wind your way up the mountain by bus or car to arrive in idyllic Gaucín. Whitewashed buildings with red-tiled roofs have a timeless, classic feel, dotted along winding streets once favoured by the brandy and tobacco smugglers who criss-crossed these mountains. See traditional shuttle looms at work at the Lanas del Rio Mill, take guided walks and horse rides through the craggy mountains, or clamber up to the Castillo del Aguila for amazing views. On clear days, you can expect to see all the way to Gibraltar and the Rif Mountains of North Africa.
Come evening, gather in the village’s bars and restaurants to sample local vintages and taste tapas made from local produce. The lovely neighbourhood restaurant at our pick of the best places to stay in Gaucín specialises in seasonal dishes and is not to be missed!
