About Giritale

The Giritale Reservoir, an engineering marvel dating back to the 17th century, continues to have an enormous agricultural and ecological impact on the landscape which surrounds it. A tranquil alternative to the nearby hubs of Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa, it’s a beautiful destination for avid bird watchers and outdoorsy adventurers. The best places to stay in Giritale promise dazzling reservoir views — perfect for solo travellers, couples or friends and families.

Heritage aficionados will delight in day trips to imposing Sigiriya Rock, the cave temples at Dambulla, or the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. The Minneriya National Park, famed for its annual elephant gathering, is fascinating. Expect to see vibrant birds, buffalo, and myriad marvellous creatures whilst on safari, too.

An often underrated part of rural Sri Lanka, Giritale itself is wonderful for long walks, cycle rides and kayaking. Rise early to spot birds flitting across the water with an expert guide, or to capture beautiful photos in the soft light. Dramatic sunsets are also very special — and best admired, drink in hand, from your terrace at one of the best places to stay in Giritale.
