About Deventer

Perched on the banks of the picturesque IJssel River in the eastern Netherlands, Deventer is a captivating small city with a vibrant cultural scene. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, Deventer has a stunning medieval heart, with pretty cobbled streets lined with heritage residences. Many of the best places to stay in Deventer are housed in beautifully preserved historic edifices, meaning that you can expect stacks of charm — as well as a warm welcome — when you visit.

A long-time member of the illustrious Hanseatic League, Deventer was amongst the region’s key trading centres for centuries. Delve into this history on a guided walking tour, or amble around independently, soaking up highlights including De Brink Square, the towering Berg Kerk, Lebuinuskerk and the red-brick Deventer History Museum. Regular markets, festivals and cultural events create a lively buzz in the old town centre; the annual Deventer Book Market is a particular favourite.

Venture further afield to discover the wild heathlands of the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park, or the magnificent meadows, flatlands and heaths of the Veluwezoom National Park. Both are brilliant for walking, cycling and horse riding, and at their most striking their the heather is in bloom. Tuck into delicious Deventer Koek — a traditional honey cake — at the best places to stay in Deventer after big days out in the Overijssel countryside.
