About Hay on Wye

A picturesque market town nestled on the border between England and Wales, charming Hay-on-Wye is a wonderful place for a romantic weekend away. Brimming with bookshops, home to a 12th-century castle and surrounded by spectacular scenery, Hay-on-Wye has plenty to offer. Accommodation options are wide-ranging, from cosy B&Bs to chic boutique hotels, catering to a whole host of budgets. Whether you’re eager to nibble homemade cake in a Georgian townhouse or dine on delectable seasonal dishes in a smart hotel restaurant, our pick of the best places to stay in Hay-on-Wye has you covered.

Home to the renowned annual Hay Literary Festival, Hay-on-Wye is a book lover’s paradise. So much so, in fact, that there’s said to be one bookshop for every 40 residents. In a town of 1,500, that’s certainly saying something! Booth’s is credited with having started it all, with the opening of the town’s first bookshop in 1962, whilst Rose’s Books specialises in out-of-print children’s books, Murder and Mayhem stocks crime and thrillers and Hay Cinema Bookshop is housed in an old cinema, now filled with second hand books. Come with an empty suitcase!

Beyond its bountiful bookshops, Hay-on-Wye also boasts natural and historical attractions aplenty. Marvel at the ruins of 12th-century Hay Castle and stroll through the grounds of Cwm Byddog, the Hergest Croft Gardens and Hay Forest, or amble along the pretty River Wye. Take things up a notch with a bike ride to the ruins of Llanthony Priory, a canoe journey down the River Wye, or a day’s hike up Hay Bluff and the Twmpa for striking views of both England and Wales. Set between the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons, Hay-on-Wye is an excellent base for adventurous explorers: there’s no shortage of natural wonders to discover.

Back in town, you’ll find highlights of the local arts scene at the Lion Street Gallery, and plenty of cosy pubs to retreat to in the evenings. Set in an enchanting location and bursting with culture and history — including a burgeoning calendar of annual food, art and literature festivals — Hay-on-Wye is a hugely popular destination.
