About Stamford

Set on the banks of the River Welland, Stamford is a traditional English town near Peterborough, elegantly constructed from honey-coloured sandstone. Britain’s first ever conservation area, Stamford boasts more than 600 listed buildings, both within and around the town, including stone and timber-framed houses, old town walls, churches and classic pubs. Often featured in BBC period dramas, as well as the iconic The Da Vinci Code film, the town is a superb destination for heritage aficionados and keen ramblers. Many of the best places to stay in Stamford are charming, relaxed and intimate — reflective of the town itself.

Explore Stamford on foot, popping into pretty boutiques and galleries, pubs and cafés as you amble around. Highlights include the 15th Century William Browne Hospital and medieval almshouse; St Mary’s church with its wonky spire, and stunning Burghley House with gardens designed by Capability Brown. The annual Stamford Fair, held mid-Lent since the Middle Ages, is a particularly wonderful experience. Expect rooms at the best places to stay in Stamford to fill up fast; the fair appeared in Shakespeare’s Henry IV, and has a deservedly brilliant reputation.

Outdoorsy travellers, on the other hand, can discover the nearby Rutland Water Nature Reserve, the Barnack Hills, and the Holes National Nature Reserve. Follow walking, hiking and cycling trails, spot birds in the early morning and evening, or admire ancient trees, budding flowers and beautiful vistas. A charming part of Lincolnshire, Stamford is ideal for a weekend away as a couple or with family and friends.
