About Troon

Troon is an atmospheric coastal town, with a long scoop of a sandy bay, stunning views of the Isle of Arran, and a famous golf course which regularly hosts the Open Championship. The ‘atmospheric’ part of the description is lent, in part, by a collection of beautifully crumbling castles, but there’s also something about the incredible light here, and the rolling lush green of the hills and purple of the heather. If you are looking for the best places to stay in Troon close to the golf course, you’re in luck, because Troon has several courses, and all our recommendations are close to a course or two. Our recommendations include country house hotels, and contemporary harbour-side apartments.

Beyond golf, many love Troon for its beaches: a soft-sanded collection of scoops and dunes, crowned with black rocks and sheltered coves. Bucket-and-spade families come on down! But Troon’s coastline is also much loved by windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Beyond golf and beaches, Troon is a small, and very charming, fishing town, with a very visitor-friendly town centre of cute cafes, homely pubs, independent boutiques and a rather wonderful array of contemporary art galleries. The fish market still takes over the harbour most days, and one of our recommendations for the best places to stay in Troon is quite close by — convenient because, as with most fish markets, the action usually starts early. Troon is also conveniently close to Ardrossan, which is where you pick up the ferry to Arran.

The Best Places to Stay in Troon

For a Countryside Escape

  • Lochgreen House is situated just outside town, surrounded by woodlands and its own grounds and gardens. It’s been carefully converted from a large and elegant manor house, and now offers guests peace and tranquility in its 32 generously proportioned rooms and suites, and in its luxurious spa and award-winning restaurant. Each of the rooms has been individually designed and decorated, and downstairs are a number of uniquely dressed sitting rooms with cosy fires and a welcoming air. An ideal spot for completely unwinding.

For Families

  • The Salt Lodge is a collection of one and two-bed self-catering apartments overlooking the Troon's harbour. The wood-clad exterior in its various shades of blue is contemporary, with floor-to-ceiling windows and glass balconies — all the better for the views — and inside the contemporary simplicity continues, with plenty of blonde wood and a white backdrop. Next door is a restaurant, which is open from breakfast, where you can expect a casual atmosphere and plenty of seafood.

Travel Information

  • Troon’s closest airport is just a few miles from the centre: Prestwick International Airport, Glasgow’s second airport. You can reach Troon from Prestwick by rail in about three minutes, or just over five minutes in the car. Glasgow Airport is second closest, at about 40 minutes away by road, or 30 minutes by train. For some travellers the connections into Edinburgh International Airport will be more convenient, and from here it’s about an hour and quarter to drive, or catch a cab, or just under three hours by public transport — you have a choice of bus/train and tram. If you’re coming via London, you can catch the train all the way up to Glasgow, and on to Troon; it takes around six hours, with trains leaving every hour.
  • If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • Scotland’s unpredictable weather is well known, and Troon is subject to all the usual recommendations about packing wet weather gear at all times. The up-side is that during the summer months, many Scottish destinations enjoy long days with plenty of light. June, July and August are the lightest months, summers are the most popular time to visit.
