About Ullapool
Ullapool may be an essential waypoint on your journey to the Scottish Highlands or islands, because this is where the northwest Highlands ferry leaves from, linking to Stornaway and the Western Isles. But for those planning a longer sojourn, you’re likely to be beguiled by the beautiful spot on which Ullapool sits. All around is the untamed wilderness of a Highlands landscape, and directly in front of the town is serene Loch Broom. It’s not just the vistas that Ullapool will charm you with, this is a really friendly little village, with great pubs and guest houses — some of which our Gurus have included on their list of the best places to stay in Ullapool — a fascinating museum, an independent bookshop, and several craft shops.
Small, whitewashed fishermen’s houses line the harbour, and colourful fishing boats bob in the water or line the beach, a welcome sight to walk back to if you’re been tramping amongst heathery Highland hills all day (some of the best are the trails around Loch Maree and the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve). There are a number of excellent pubs vying to welcome you back too!
Ullapool is also close to the beaches of Gruinard and Mellon Udrigle, which are incredible places to be on the long, light evenings of summer. And just off the coast is the Isle Martin Bird Sanctuary, and a number of seal-spotting islands. And there’s a nine-hole golf course.
However don't forget that this is a very popular little place both with those travelling onwards to the isles and those staying for the scenery. So if you want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Ullapool during the peak holiday months, do your homework and book well ahead.
The Best Places to Stay in Ullapool
For Families
- The Ceilidh Place is an historic pick in Ullapool, close to the ferry port, and the perfect jumping off point for both the Highland and Islands. From the outside this long, low building looks like a country inn of sorts, with whitewashed facade and black details, and inside there’s a warm stmosphere from open fires, stoves, and well cared for antiques. The 13 rooms, which come in all shapes and sizes, are all done in a simple yet very comfortable style. Families have a number of options, but our Gurus recommend the Clubhouse, with back-to-back bunkbeds. The bar and restaurant are cosy too, and there’s a charming little library.
Best B&Bs
- Westlea House is peacefully positioned on a tree-lined road in central Ullapool, close to beautiful Loch Broom and the ferry terminal. Its five rooms are all spacious, with contemporary bathrooms. They vary in decor, from some really fun designed twin rooms — perfect for kids — a mountain themed room with a stand-alone tub, and a simpler ocean themed triple. The communal spaces are decorated with the same welcoming charm and whimsy, and there’s an open fireplace in the lounge, and a record player in the conservatory.

Travel Information
- Inverness Airport is the closest airport, around an hour and fifteen minutes from Ullapool by car, or close to three hours by bus. Inverness Airport has good connections to London, but also Ireland and Amsterdam. Aberdeen International Airport might also be useful to consider; it’s about three hours drive, but only about an hour more by public transport. If you’re travelling by train, the closest major station is in Inverness, and then it’s the CityLink 961 bus from there again, taking about an hour and twenty minutes.
- If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
- Ullapool is magical in the summer months, when the light seems to last and last — from late June to early July it doesn’t get dark until about 11pm! However as with any Scottish destination you should be prepared for four seasons in one day.
