Kolonaki Square (Plateia Filiki Eterias) feels like a tiny slice of Paris transplanted to the heart of Athens, a classically chic, upscale quarter between Syntagma and Mt Likavitos (Lycabettus Hill). Typical patrons dress to impress, with designer accessories and lapdogs to match. The tiny square is surrounded by pricy pastry shops where well-off Athenians repair for sticky baklava and cream cakes, coffee, ouzo and post-prandial liqueurs. And here is where you'll find many of the best hotels in Kolonaki too.

With its posh galleries, antique shops and stores, Kolonaki is the ultimate happy hunting ground for well-heeled shoppers. A bevy of remarkable museums adds culture cred. For fabulous views and a breath of fresher air, hop on the cable car to the top of Lycabettus. No true patron of Kolonaki would be seen dead on public transport, but if you can bear to rub shoulders with the hoi polloi, Syntagma metro station is just a few blocks away.
