11 of the Best Luxury Hotels in Umbria
One of the things our Gurus love most about Umbria is also one of the things they love most about the best luxury hotels in Umbria: the incredible views. We also love the beautifully preserved medieval hilltop towns with their elegant palazzos, some of which have now been converted into some of Umbria’s best luxury hotels. And the incredible country villas with their lush, elegant gardens and olive groves that appear misty in the sunshine… some of these have been converted into luxurious hotels too. We also love Umbria’s food and wine, and art and architecture, and our recommendations for the best luxury hotels in Umbria also includes two converted monasteries, and a restaurant with a Michelin-starred chef. And all in this lesser trodden neighbour of Tuscany...
For a romantic stay
- Built in the 16th century, the Palazzo Seneca is an extremely elegant old palazzo in the delightfully sleepy town of Norcia. Inside it’s been converted into a 24 room, family-run hotel offering the highest standards of traditional Umbrian hospitality, paired with modern treats like complimentary spa facilities and a fine restaurant. The decor is an elegant marriage of contemporary style and local character, think four-poster beds, original tiled floors and stone walls, and well-shaped leather furniture.
- If you’re looking for a country villa style hotel and you like the idea of original features like carved open fireplaces and historic frescoes, the Borgo Dei Conti could be perfect for you. Surrounded by the undulating Umbrian countryside south of Perugia, this country estate has always been luxurious and elegant, but it now has first class hotel facilities too, including a sleek spa and gym and a choice of two restaurants. There are 50 rooms and suites, some suitable for families.
Great Historic Luxury Hotels
- L’Orto degli Angeli is a beautiful 17th century palazzo turned stunning, 14 room luxury hotel in the old heart of Bevagna, a very pretty town about 30 minutes from Assisi. Romantic and peaceful, the rooms here have wonderful original features, plus lovely art and antiques. The best have four-poster beds too. The palazzo’s gardens are also luxurious, and bountiful, offering their organic produce to the hotel’s restaurant, which specialises in Umbrian cuisine, and is part of an ancient Roman amphitheatre. If you enjoy your meal you’re also able to arrange cooking lessons.
For a Luxury Spa Hotel
- Close to Perugia, the Borgobrufa Spa Resort is one of the largest spa resorts in Umbria, with 50 rooms and suites, the very largest of which have their own private pools and terraces, as well as more rooms than many houses. All the interiors have a very Umbrian feel, with wooden floors, terracotta tiles and exposed beams. Positioned on a small hill, the views are picturesque. As well as an extensive spa menu and spa facilities, there are also several restaurants and bars. Adults only.
- The Relais Todini has been converted from a 12th century country house, complete with original frescoes in many of the rooms, stone walls and doorways, beamed ceilings and rooms with huge proportions. This is a really special place to stay, memorable for all the right reasons. It’s located on a small hilltop just outside Todi, and the views are idyllic. The hotel has 12 rooms and suites, a large pool, which also has incredible views, a spa, and an excellent restaurant with an impressive wine cellar.
The Best Luxury Hotels in Umbria’s Centres
- Perugia only has one five-star hotel and it’s the Hotel Brufani. Elegant, with a grande dame feel, this aristocratic villa conversion is big, with 94 rooms and suites, and some of the suites are huge, with numerous rooms and private terraces too. It’s also perfectly located on a hilltop, with views over Perugia and across Umbria. There's a spa built into the property's medieval vaults, and the refined hotel restaurant is excellent.
- One of our Gurus favourite hotels in Assisi is the Nun Assisi Relais & Spa, a five-star hotel in a spectacularly converted 13th century monastery. There are just 18 rooms and suites, all beautifully designed with a very contemporary feel, but showing off this building’s wonderful original features, like original frescoes and exposed stone walls. The restaurant is gourmet, and there’s a cosy bar. The views from the hillside position in this hilltop town are incredible and could easily be the most memorable part of your trip. Romantic? Extremely!
The Best Luxury Hotels in Rural Umbria
- The Borgo della Marmotta is a long, low stone farmhouse and villa, beautifully converted into a collection of 11 bedrooms and seven suites and apartments, each sleeping four. All the rooms are spacious, with plenty of original features like exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings, and they’re finished with oversized Italian country furniture. Inside the main building the rustic Italian theme continues; there's a large sitting room with a huge open fireplace and a couple of vast sofas, an honesty bar and French doors which lead to a small paved terrace overlooking the gardens. Which are beautiful too, with a big pool and plenty of secured spots. There’s also an excellent restaurant serving a simple, local menu. Perfect for a family escape.
- Umbria is littered with gorgeous, historic properties crammed with original features and beautiful antiques, but if you prefer more contemporary decor try the Borgo La Chiaracia, an elegant, five-star, 26 room spa hotel outside Orvieto. The rooms and suites are spread through three custom-built traditional style buildings, and they’re styled in a classic, contemporary manner. The best of them have wonderful views and private terraces. The spa is state-of-the-art, with a hot tub and a sauna, there’s a fantastic indoor/outdoor pool and a great restaurant headed by a Michelin-starred chef.
For great value luxury
- The Abbazia San Pietro in Valle is a wonderfully historic, pale-stone Benedictine abbey in a beautiful hillside spot north of Terni. The views are incredible, from all of the 19 cells, which have been converted into comfortable rooms and family-sized suites, retaining their original stone floors, wood beams and art. The hotel also has extensive grounds and gardens, and a private chapel with beautiful frescoes.
- Alla Posta dei Donini is a stately, country-feeling hotel occupying an elegant historic residence in the town of San Martino in Campo, just outside Perugia. There are 48 rooms and multi-room suites, spread through two interconnected villas, the best of which have original door and ceiling frescoes. There’s also a large outdoor pool and a state-of-the-art spa. There’s plenty of choice when it comes to the size of your room, so this is a family-friendly pick.
