11 Best Luxury Hotels in Maine
Maine is a luxurious place for a break, be it a romantic mini-break or a whole summer of luxurious seaside sunshine. It’s known for its incredible seafood and fresh produce markets, and so too for its restaurants — lobster anyone? — and for its rich history, and breathtaking scenery. So if you’re treating yourself to Maine why not also treat yourself, and your family, to a stay in one of the best luxury hotels in Maine. Our Gurus have come up with a great variety of luxury Maine accommodation, from luxe lodges and romantic retreats to spoiling spa hotels and fantastic family resorts.
For the View
- The Cliff House Maine is a super luxurious resort, perched on a clifftop just outside charming Ogunquit. The elegant white, many-windowed architecture of the resort might be hugging the clifftop, but it’s for aesthetic purposes, the resort owns seventy acres along the coast, so there’s plenty of space to spread out the facilities and activities. Almost all the of the 226 rooms and suites have sea views, and most have a balcony or terrace too. The spa is vast, and sea-facing as well, as are all four of the restaurants, and both the indoor and outdoor pools. There’s lots on offer for all the family here.
On the Waterfront
- Bayview Hotel is a chic and secluded waterfront hotel on the outskirts of pretty Bar Harbor. All of its 26 rooms and suites have private, ocean-facing decks or balconies, as well as lots of light, neutral colour schemes, plus great art and design pieces. There’s no restaurant, but they offer an excellent breakfast, and you’re within a very pleasant stroll of Bar Harbor’s many bars and restaurants.
For the Finer Things
- Portland’s The Press Hotel occupies the city’s old Herald headquarters, and the newspaper theme runs throughout, from the type-print carpets and wallpapers, and charming line drawing art by local artists. And they have some fabulous vintage typewriters too! Portland has a reputation as a foodie destination, but even here the restaurant stands out for its seasonality, and farm-to-fork approach, though of course here it’s more like sea-to-spoon! There are 110 rooms and suites, with family-sized picks, as well as romantic options.
- The 20 room Camden Harbor Inn is raised just above Camden Harbor, surrounded by mature trees, so that is feels secluded, but is super convenient for the marina and its charms. Converted from an elegant, 19th century mansion, each guestroom has been individually decorated — but all feature huge, sink-into beds and indulgent bathrooms. The inn also has a small spa, and a sophisticated, award-winning restaurant.
For Fun
- Right on the river at Kennebunkport, the Yachtsman Hotel & Marina Club has a fun take on luxury, with playfully nautical decor in the 30 rooms and suites, and a pool that floats on the river. All of the rooms, which stretch along the river long are low, bungalow style, have large windows onto the river, and their own patch of grass and deck chairs. Guests also have access to a private bar and hotel bikes and kayaks. A basket of breakfast goodies is delivered each morning, and you’re within a really pleasant stroll of some great places to eat and drink.
For a Romantic Retreat
- The Blair Hill Inn is situated away from the coast, on an eighty acre country estate which includes the shoreline of a vast glacier lake that the inn overlooks. There are just ten elegant rooms and suites, all featuring private outdoor space, fireplaces, and unique antiques. The restaurant is excellent, as is the spa, and you have so few other guests you’ll need to share with, it’s just you and the wilderness…
- The Lodge at Moosehead Lake is a small, and totally enchanting lodge on the shores of Moosehead Lake. Each of the nine suites have huge windows overlooking the lake, a private balcony or patios, and they all have their own rustic theme — you’ll never forget the indoor swings, antique snow shoes, or the four-poster bed made out of totem poles! This is a remote escape, and not suitable for kids.
- The White Barn Inn is a wonderful rustic, but totally luxurious inn on the Kennebunk River, just outside of Kennebunkport, and surrounded by rural views. The inn has 26 rooms and suites, featuring pleasures like whirlpool tubs and fireplaces, and the 140 year old barn has been converted into a delightful little restaurant. There’s also a small, but well regarded, spa.
For Couples
- The Chiltern Inn in Bar Harbor, has just seven rooms and suites fitted into this historic Victorian carriage house conversion, and all seven rooms are beautifully decorated with period antiques and luxurious details. The facilities are impressive, especially considering there are so few other guests to share them with: there’s a lap pool, a games room, library, a movie room, an art gallery and the garden to explore. There’s no restaurant, but each evening they offer wine and cheese, and you’re only ten minutes walk from the hum of Bar Harbor.
For Families
- Hidden Pond is a collection of charming New England cottages surrounded by a stunning landscape. This is the perfect place to treat your whole family, with plenty of space for all, roaring fires, private views and rain showers in each of the cottages, plus a pool, spa and fantastic restaurant to share. Nightly bonfires, yoga, cocktail mixology, art classes and hotel bicycles are just the start of the list of facilities and activities.
- The Inn by the Sea is a a luxurious, 61 room inn, perfectly positioned on Cape Elizabeth, Portland. The New England style facade allows for big windows and many balconies, and the majority of the rooms benefit from water views of some sort — they’re also light and lovely, with contemporary details. This is a wonderful pick for a spa break — the spa is superb — but it’s also great for families, because there’s so much offered on site, from early morning yoga classes, to nightly fire-pit fun.
