The Best Hotels in Gramercy Park, New York

Gramercy Park is the name of a small, private park, only open to folk who have the key and live on the square. It’s also the name commonly given to the bit of Manhattan that surrounds it. Though you can also call it Gramercy or the Gramercy Park Historic District. And it’s the li’le ol’ park at the centre of the district that has help the area achieve this status - this is one of only two private parks in New York, and only three in the whole of the U.S., and it’s been key to this area remaining so unchanged for the last 180 years or so. As a place to stay in New York, Gramercy Park is quiet, safe and beautiful, and our recommendations for 5 of the best hotels in Gramercy Park are also some of our favourite hotels in the whole of Manhattan.

Gramercy Park is also a central spot, between Park Avenue and Third Avenue, and 23rd Street to 14th Street. But to really experience the area you need to stay on the Square, at the Gramercy Park Hotel - which has 12 keys to the park and hotel guests are escorted to the park and picked up later by hotel staff - it’s frowned upon to take to many photos, though… Many New York luminaries have lived by the park, including John Steinbeck, Alfred Ringling from Ringling Brothers Circus, Gregory Peck and James Cagney, one of the Astors, a former mayor, Thomas Edison and now it’s home to Julia Roberts.

As well as its almost unique private park, Gramercy Park is also home to two of New York’s first apartment buildings, numbers 34 and 36 Gramercy Park East.
