Hotel Review
Proving that less indeed is more, Casa do Rio is an example of simplicity well done. Six bedrooms, with shower rooms attached, are clad in white wooden clapboard and decorated with large black and white photographs of the area. Floor to ceiling glass windows, opening onto a balcony, overlook the river and there is fireplace for cooler nights. Just near the main building are two free-standing suites with log fires and bath tubs as well as showers.
Interiors in the main house have an Out of Africa feel. At the heart of the hotel is a sitting room with a big fireplace around which are director’s chairs, leather sofas and brightly woven rugs; coat stands on which panamas and binoculars hang, fill the corners. The room opens right the way along onto a terrace, where tables are set in summer. Whilst lunchtime delivers tapas and light snacks, dinner is a veritable feast with regional specialities like Portuguese codfish with cornbread, octopus rice or kid, roasted in the wood-fired oven. Wine pairing, including the wine from the vineyards around you, is not to be missed.
Outside there is a swimming pool and a boat on which you can explore the Douro.
